Periodontology
Periodontology is a branch of dental medicine that deals with the health of the supporting structures of the teeth (periodontal). The periodontium consists of the gums (gingiva), bone and fibers that bind the tooth to the bone (periodontal ligament). The inflammation begins in the superficial layers of the periodontium, where it first manifests itself as gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums.
